Uncle Gill,

Delbert Barker (December 3, 1932 - March 5, 2024) was an American Country and Rockabilly singer from Kentucky, often called "The King of The Covers" for his many sound-alike versions of hits.

Born in Frenchburg, Kentucky, he moved with his family to Middletown Ohio around 1943-1944; He started performing as a teen in local talent contests, radio and TV shows.

He was most active as a recording artist from 1951-1952 to 1957. In the early 1950s he worked as a session vocalist for producer Paul Burkhardt in Cincinnati, Ohio, recording over a 100 tracks of cover versions of contemporary Country hits for budget labels like Kentucky, Gateway, Big 4 Hits, Tops and others. He often used pseudonyms and was known for imitating multiple artists styles.

In later years he wrote a top hit for Charley Pride, "You Almost Slipped My Mind" (4-December 1980).

This collection of Hank Williams songs is very good, He has two cds of rock-a-billy songs on Bear Family, but they are out of stock (or out of print). Would you please consider looking hard for this music in your sources and posting them. He deserves to be honored and remembered.

Thank you,

Hit Parade

@Hitparade: Thanks for the story. I had already posted a few HMC albums, a Stomper Time, a B.A.C.M. But I can't find any trace of the two Bear Family albums dedicated to Rockabilly tracks you talk about. I'll put the Stomper Time online soon, and maybe two Castironarm compilations called "Delbert Barker - King Of The Low Budget Labels"..
