Thank you to all those who showed me, again, their support in this new episode of harsh criticism against the blog and my way of offering musical material of such poor quality.

The return of the haters...

Anonym : The beauty is, you can get all of those shows in LOSSLESS format for FREE at http://www.dimeadozen.org/index.php ... No need to download the crap from here. Enjoy. - As for Amazon, I hope that more of UG's discs will appear there.

Jane, you hit the nail on the head. This so called UG is just an old and lonely fart from France. What else do you expect from people who live there? If you look at some of those homemade covers, they even have spelling errors. Lousy work, not worth to "steal". Nowadays photo software is more advanced to do better jobs. Long live Jane and all those who fight against low quality downloads on the internet. In 2022 we all deserve better because we can get better elsewhere.@ Man from Mordor: this sounds like a threat to me, maybe the police should get involved in this. You seem to be a violent criminal.

Thank you Jane for this comment. UG simply sucks. I still wonder why he has so many followers. It seems, most of those who visit this blog do not care about quality, just about file size. The smaller the better.

Jane : Uncle Gil, I first visited your blog about June 8, 2022.
I think I downloaded a ZIP file that spat out some lousy MP3s which sounded thin, degraded, and weak. I deleted them within a few hours.
It was a minor disappointment, but I explored your blog anyway to try to figure out why you do things the way you do. What I found was incoherence and stubbornness.
I am having a very difficult time being sympathetic in regards to your irritation at having your artwork stolen. I am sure you spent several minutes on it, and I do agree that you deserve at least some credit.
However, I wonder if you could have legally protected it as your work. I tend to doubt it. Ultimately, those covers are just memes you created using images of the artists created by others.
You are a weird bird, Uncle Gil. You "grab from the web" whatever you want, muck it up as you see fit, and then act all indignant and aggrieved when someone does the same to you. You oddly think you deserve a lot of respect that you do not actually deserve.

Dear Uncle Gil

I comme from time to time to visit your blog. I allways take quite an hour to look at the covers and then to choose only one album, and I have the same feelings as when I was a teenager in a music store and had only the money to buy an album. After downling this album, I take my time to listen all that album one or two times.
Why do I choose only one album when it's possible to dl a lot of albums for free ? Because I've stopped to dl albums, when it's only possible to have time to try a spin or it's not possible to have time to listen to all the albums. With this rule , there is no frustration, but only a great, great, great pleasure to listen entirely to an album.
Your blog is full of a lot of treasure, and I thank you for all your generous shares.

I guess some people cannot live without critisizing one thing or another. I have met people like this in my life and tried to stay away from them. They seem to enjoy being 'against' something. I just wish they kept their damn opinion private and let other people, who are positive in their actions, do their thing as they see fit. I come to Uncle Gil's blog almost everyday and often download files. Most of the time I get something that I keep and sometimes I will delete the post if I don't like it. It's as simple as that. I don't go round bitching about this and that and get personal about it. There's a lot of work involved in running a blog and I respect that. Others should do the same.
The hell with people like Jane.

Who cares what a nobody like Jane thinks. If she doesn't like what she finds here there are plenty of other sites she could go to. There is a lot of rubbish talked about quality but at the end of the day a 40 year old recording is unlikely to be the high quality we expect today - and listening to a conversion to flac or to mp3 won't improve the quality without a lot of very careful editing and adjustment to the original - which isn't usually the case with non-commercial releases. Thank you for all you do UG and keep up the good work.

I love music too much to listen to .mp3 tracks. They simply ruin my ears. But it seems that all people above 60 or 70 do not have such a good hearing anymore to enjoy the real sound. Thank God for those blogs who offer lossless tracks, even if you need to pay a dollar or two every now and then. Best regards, Peter

Many thanks Uncle Gil and greetings from Allemagne Armin

********************************

Jane :

I have merely presented the evidence that you either:
(a) convert your material to MP3 format because you are a mingy schlockmeister, or
(b) present your material in MP3 format because you actually obtain your material in a lossy format from some inferior source and then misrepresent it.
Your apparent response is that you "(a) convert your material to MP3 format because you are a mingy schlockmeister" and you apologize for being a "French asshole" which is a derogatory name I never called you.
To the contrary of your assertion, I do not care to hear myself or spend time analyzing files rather than listening to music.
I use my ears to listen to music, and what you present here on this blog is a lousy, lossy, needlessly inferior product, not worth listening to.
Your blog is fraudulent, but I do find that fact and your incoherent defense of it to be interesting.

JDmetrius a dit…

*****************

Jane :

- First, bt.etree.org does not re-encode files to satisfy "audiophiles," a term you put in quotes to emphasize your contempt.
bt.etree.org directs its uploaders as follows:
"Do not start with source material from lossy compression such as mp3, mp4, or aac. It has already lost some frequencies that cannot be regained. Instead, track down the original .wav source from which the .mp3s were made. You might want to do a little SourceAnalysis on a couple sample tracks of a show to see if what you see is consistent with the type of source you're supposed to have; and to see if the transfer was done properly."
- Second, when you extract data from a CD, you don't get an info sheet.
But, when you download from bt.etree.org, you get an info sheet with the download.
This material was uploaded by a user named "cheeseincident" to bt.etree.org
This user would have created the original info sheet.
Your info *just happens to be an almost exact copy* of the info sheet from bt.etree.org
The only differences in your info sheet is:
a. you added a "?" instead of a blank space for track 20
b. you added a "0" at the front of track numbers "1-9"
c. you used a dash instead of a decimal after each track number
d. you corrected some typos in the song titles
e. you corrected the title to track 11
f. you deleted the statement "I have not made any editing changes to what I extracted from CD."
g. you moved the list of musicians to the top, but its otherwise identical.
So, the evidence is you obtained the info sheet from bt.etree.org and modified it.
You even repeat the exact text at the end:
"CD extraction via EAC
Unknown taper"
- Third, although you say that the reason you present this material in MP3 format is because you obtained it in a lossy format, your stated reason is obviously NOT the true reason you present this material in MP3 format.
The fact is that you present ALL material in this format, even the vinyl albums that you say you rip from your vinyl.
You most certainly do not rip your vinyl directly to MP3. Nobody would do that.
* You either convert everything to MP3 because you are a stingy schlockmeister, or it’s because you actually obtain your material in a lossy format and then misrepresent the material as your own vinyl rips. *
Furthermore, you combined ALL of these individual files from "Grandpa Played the Fiddle" into one single MP3 file.
You either went out of your way to degrade this material sufficiently for your personal purposes before presenting it, or you just lied about where it came from.
You display personal contempt for "audiophiles," even using the term in sneering quotation marks.
Audiophiles are just people who care about high-fidelity sound reproduction.
But, you display active contempt for high-fidelity sound reproduction.
You falsely claim your focus is to "preserve from oblivion these wonderful objects of the past." It’s an obviously false statement.
If it were true, why would you use a lossy format on lossless material that is in the public domain or that isn’t being claimed as copy protected?
You should at least have the decency to delete that false statement from your blog and replace it with an admission “I do not care at all about the quality of my material.” Or, even “I have active contempt for audiophiles.”

Thank you Jane for this comment. UG simply sucks. I still wonder why he has so many followers. It seems, most of those who visit this blog do not care about quality, just about file size. The smaller the better. My hearing is still good, that`s why I prefer lossless files, even though it takes 20 more seconds to download them. Have a blessed day ...

The attitude of this so called Uncle stinks. But what do you expect from a 70+ year old idiot? Thank you Jane for sharing the lossless files. What amazes me is that this blog still has followers and "grateful" people for those "rare" finds.

HometownUnicorn a dit…

Whatever! Thank you for curating this amazing collection, turning on younger folks that missed these nuggets!! Cheers!!

Anonyme a dit…

What a silly comment from Jane (and an equally silly, and needlessly abusive, follow-up from Anonymous). I have followed UG for years (and missed him during his downtime of a year or so ago) because of the unmatched selection of rare, original recordings in genres I have come to appreciate (hillbilly bop, old-school C&W, rockabilly) mostly because the music is available in such generous profusion on this site. Jane's bit torrent site shows nothing in these genres. Who knows what is hidden in the user forums of Anon's bit-torrent hangout?

Sure, it would be great if UG posted FLAC files, but I am grateful for the good work he and others on this site posting rare albums and thoughtfully curated synthetic LPs (and, BTW, I really like the covers) at 320kbs. Please keep up your work!

Best,

Sam

Some vinyl is low quality & I've had complaints that a FLAC file wasn't FLAC because the idiot didn't know anything other that what they thought they saw\heard.

I don't understand why people would not download a file they want just because it's "low quality" surely if a better copy isn't available & the only copy anywhere in any quality is the one that can be downlowded here anybody intelligent would say thank you.

Bonjour Uncle Gil

Old Rock a dit "love this blog...forever".

Amicalement
Chris-France
