Very interesting stuff here Uncle Gil.

Do you have any more in this series? (This Vol says Vol 16)

These types of compilations often contain rare recordings... eg I have found (so far), 2 Jerry Lee Sun recordings that are not on the mammoth 18 CD Boxset that was recently released...... obviously the compiler/s did not do their homework properly......and that was little effort by myself to identify these recordings.

Uncle Gil a dit…

@Anonym : sorry, for now I can not get my hands on the series. Hope & Wait... Hope & See...

Hey @Anonym (great pseudo!). As one of those who did the Bear Family compilation (the one who doesn't work properly, just spend 4000 hours digging in the tapes), I would be very interested to get the info on which tracks were omitted in my poor work. I hope it is not one of those poor remix done years after JLL left Sun when Shelby Singleton acquired Sun records. He even remixed duos between Orion and JLL making it think it was Elvis singing with JLL. So make us benefit of your serious homework and tell us specifically which tracks you are talking about. Thanks. Pierre

Hi Pierre,

I have only just read the above.....certainly don't be offended at my comments.... I sincerely hope I'm wrong, however from memory, one (or even both) of the Charly "Nuggets" albums contain track(s) (considerable time differences) that don't appear to be on BF box. There are others as well.

I fully realise what an enormous task it must been for yourself and originally for Martin Hawkins.

Please prove me wrong.

Richard

Difference in length is often due to the speed used for mix/mastering, thus, not a different take. If you give precise info, we will check. You must tell us which records you compare by giving the track opus number in the Bear Family Box and the record (label, catalogue number and side/track number)you consider to be different. If you can, put them at same speed (with tool like Soundforge) and one track on the left and the other on the right of your player for comparison both aural and visual. If you cannot make this, please compare by simple hearing and give some difference details. You cannot just say 'there are differences, prove I'm wrong'! Thanks Richard.

Many thanks for your prompt reply Pierre,

Your complex explanations above, indicate to me that I am definitely wrong and my sincere apologies for casting an unfounded cloud over your research.

This coming week, I will endeavour to check out the tracks in question and get back to you here.

Thank you again,

Richard

Hi again Pierre,

I just had a quick look at Nuggets Vol 2 sleeve notes.

Nuggets LP says "Friday Night(s)" is an alternate take, however BF(page 76) says only 1 (one) take recorded and issued on CD 10.

Nuggets LP says "Crazy Arms" is an unissued take but is it on the BF box?

Once again, I hope that I am incorrect and that the BF Box contains everything recorded by the Great Man at Sun.

Cheers,

Richard

Hi Richard,
You say in your original message you didn't make a little effort to identify two tracks missing in the Bear Family box... well, please make a little effort before spreading wrong information and criticizing those who did huge efforts (1000's of hours!). The minimum yo can do is to listen (just listen!) to these two tracks you mention and make a comparison, and not just read a sleeve. If we had just read sleeves, the Bear Family box would have got 2000 tracks with 1500 duplicates. Charly did a very poor work with this Nuggets LP. They were heavily critized at the time for using wrong tapes and producing takes previously issued. Just read Barrie Gamblin report in fan club magazine Fireball Mail at the time (October 1977)which complained about it.
Have I done my homework (as you say)? If so, please do yours before spreading wrong information and misleading people. Someone (a JLL completist fan) asked me confirmation before buying the Nuggets LP on Ebay on the basis of your message! In fact you should ask the moderator of this great blog to erase your message.

Thanks Pierre,

Yeah, I'm more than satisfied with the BF Box, but can you tell me if anything has ever been released un-officially that is no longer in the vaults....for example, I'm sure some stuff on the Sunstar LP "Outtakes" sounds different.(I'm obviously wrong...hopefully).

Thanks again Pierre, but nothing excuses the terrible books !!!!!....waste of money on the finished product.

Cheers,

Richard

Hey Mon Oncle,

I agree with Richard's comments above and have discovered at least 6 different takes of songs that aren't on the Box.

I wish the compilers would get it right !!!

Pierre a dit…

If you don't take 10 minutes to say which songs and takes you have discovered which are not in the box, and say on which albums they are, you can save your time and my time in giving you a reply. I wish, as a compiler, you give details or shut up.

Anonyme a dit…

Who is this very rude person Pierre?.........obviously very sensitive about his/her shortcomings.

I'm not requesting any comments from anybody, especially rude people.

Pierre a dit…

I am not anonymous, I gave my name, Pierre, and if you have the Bear Family box you know who I am. I am not hiding behind an Anonymous identity like you. Isn’t it rude to tell everyone that the compilers didn’t a proper work when they spent 1000th of hours and were not paid a penny. You can comment and it is appreciated, but it has to be constructive. To just say we did a bad job because you found 6 alternate forgotten takes but do not say what they are, is not constructive but just useless. Please state what they are so we can check the information you give. Richard, previously, had a similar comment and when he told me what was his discovery, it turned out it was just a mistake on an album sleeve (Nuggets) and he had not even compared the tracks, he apologized. So tell us what you found?
Just in case, my email is pierre.pennone@wanadoo.fr

Mon Oncle Gil,
I would like input from SERIOUS collectors who have found outtakes that may not be on the boxset and to do this, would you be so kind as to re-up this great post onto your current page please ? (it’s a little bit out of the way here).

Completists would find it to their benefit.

Piere obviously has had a bad experience assisting with the compilation (thank goodness that she was not paid) and she is extremely sensitive when someone like me or Richard questions the boxset’s completeness. Her negative hostile attitude is counter productive. (If she is reading this…….who ever looks at the credits on CDs or Records ? so I have no idea who you are)

Let the discussions begins !!!

Pierre a dit…

First Pierre is a man's name in French, equivalent of Peter. Second, I gave my identity, a minimum courtasy. I have been a vice-president of his European fan-club since 1965 and was one of four people who worked on this Bear Family box set. Obviously you do not have the box set but just a copy of the CDs. We have spent 2 years on that project with original tapes from Sun, but we compared them with 100th of published records (singles, LPs, CDs) to make sure we didn't miss an alternate take. We didn't only compare tracks on an aural basis but using software to put tracks in parallel, adjusting the speed, and comparing sound waves to detect a single difference. We might have missed an alternate take, but after two years NOT A SINGLE FAN has come with such a case. I am opened to discussion, but the minimum I ask is that the guy, who says there is a track missing in the box, provides the name of the song and on which record (LP or CD label, name, track number) and a hint to identify the difference. YOU say you have identified six altrnate tracks not on the box, so JUST SAY WHAT THEY ARE!!!! Pierre

Anonyme a dit…

Peter,

Above you have jumped to conclusions about me not havng the boxset.....how you reached that conclusion, I have no idea.....but I do indeed own the boxset.I just hope you didn't jump to conclusions when assisting with the compilation of the box.
Many years ago, a guy from Holland informed me that 14 tape boxes were missing from the vaults. He indicated (but didn't state outright) that he knew what was on them and had copies of them. He also stated a lot of things about the contents of Sunbox 4 (mainly about mistakes as to what actual takes were listed in the booklet and in the liner notes etc.) When the fantastic opportunity came to obtain the "Memphis Outakes" (yes that is how it is spelt on the CDs ...as you well know), I jumped at the chance

Pierre a dit…

I see, so if Bear Family is making a new release they should print the great news that an ANONYMOUS guy in Uncle Gil blog knows a guy (no name, of course!) in Holland who has 14 tape boxes missing in SUN INT. (and Bear Family) vaults, with unknown tracks (no list of course!). That will be great added value and I will recommend that it appears as BREAKING NEWS in the fan club magazine (Fireball Mail)! After this, I am sure that you will have more consideration for us who worked on that pooly documented Bear Family box, we have done nothing compared to what you know. Readers on this blog can now evaluate your comments. As far as I'm concerned, I stop here, no time to waste with a troll!

Anonyme a dit…

Peter,

I apologise for the fact that only about a quarter of what I wrote appears above. Something happened and the rest of what I wrote does not appear here.

I went on to elaborate what the tracks were in detail (but you would know all that) but all is lost.
Is there any reason why you chose to ignore the 'Memphis Outakes" series of CD's. They were clearly "Sun" recordings with far superior quality than anything I have ever heard before. The experience for me was like I was there in the studio.

Pierre a dit…

Please give details of those CDs 'Memphis Outtakes', on which label are they? Do you have the catalogue number (reference)? Or do you have a link to find it on Internet (discogs, amazon, ebay, etc...)? Thanks.

Anonyme a dit…

Peter,

I find it very hard to believe that you haven't got these fantastic CDs.
Maybe one of your "Fireball Mail" subscribers has them.
They were never available commercially, just a one off from a guy that put a very small ad in a magazine (The Breathless Beat) in the late 90s, calling for serious collectors to register an interest. I thought it would be a giant hoax...it sounded too good to be true. (most offers like this are).

Ask around and mention "Tennessee Saturday Night"(the Red Foley song) and that should bring out the serious collector.

Pierre a dit…

Sure, those fantastic CDs that you heard, have plenty of songs nobody else has heard, Tennessee Saturday Night, probably We Three, and certainly that early version of Chantilly Lace that Jerry Lee recorded in 1958 before the Big Bopper. You have more like this so we have fun. Other readers on this blog will evaluate the credibily of your message. Now, that's the end of my part of this useless discussion.

Anonyme a dit…

Pepe Le Pew,

Only Tennessee Saturday Night run through (0:56seconds) .....I will send copies of the CDs to you if you would like (gratis)....why are you so negative?.....don't we share a common interest?

Pierre a dit…

I propose you can contact me directly on my email at pierre.pennone@wanadoo.fr I do not believe for one second that you have a studio recording of Tennessee Saturday Night, recorded at Sun records. Either it is an amateurish live recording (taped from the audience)or it is a recording made after 1963 (not for Sun). If you prove me wrong I will apologize each day for the rest of my life. So you can contact me at the email above.
