STONEY EDWARDS – The Best Of

Posted by brujo

Stoney Edwards never made it to the big time, yet he and his soulful honky-tonk sound had a devoted following, and he was one of the few African-American performers to try his hand in the genre. He was born Frenchy Edwards in rural Oklahoma, one of seven children. Even as a boy, Edwards dreamed of playing on the Grand Ole Opry like his hero, Bob Wills. By the time he was 13, he had mastered several instruments and frequently jammed with his uncles. After leaving home as a teen, in 1954 he married and moved to San Francisco to settle down for the next 15 years. When not working, he played music. After breaking his back in a job-related mishap, Edwards was ordered to avoid heavy work by his doctors. Without an income, he seriously thought of leaving his family so they could receive welfare, but just as he was leaving his daughter came forth with the gift of wind-up toy. Deeply moved, Edwards was inspired to write his first song, "A Two Dollar Toy," and began focusing his energy on a music career.

In 1970, he was invited to play at a benefit for Bob Wills in Oakland, and his performance led to a contract with Capitol Records. The following year, he released his first album, Stoney Edwards, A Country Singer, and made his single debut with "A Two Dollar Toy," which made the Top 70. In 1972, Edwards released his second album, Down Home in the Country, and began to attract a following. "He's My Rock" came out in 1973 and stayed in the Top 20 for almost four months. Although his subsequent releases were generally minor hits, some have become regarded as country classics, such as his version of the Frazier & Owens song "Hank and Lefty Raised My Country Soul." He continued recording and appearing on the charts through the early '80s, when his career and his health began to wane. Eventually he had part of his right leg amputated due to problems with diabetes. In 1986, Edwards returned to make an album with Johnny Gimble, Ray Benson, Floyd Domino, Jimmy Day, Leon Rausch and Ralph Mooney.

BURIED COUNTRY – ABORIGINAL COUNTRY MUSIC

Posted by brujo

Long before it was commonplace for Aboriginal dance companies to tour the world or for central desert "dot paintings" to sell for astronomical sums, it was country music that first gave Aboriginal people a voice in modern Australia.

To some, black skin and country music may seem unlikely bedfellows. But from early stars like Jimmy Little and Herb Laughton through Dougie Young, Lionel Rose, Vic Simms, Bob "Brown Skin Baby" Randall, Bobby McLeod, Isaac Yama and Roger Knox, Aboriginal country music is a very real phenomenon, a long and rich tradition that's still alive today in Troy Cassar-Daley and Archie Roach. Telling black stories in a way white could understand as well, country music was not only a salve for its own dispossessed people, it became common ground, before anything else, in a divided Australia - in other words, grassroots reconciliation.

Buried Country: Original Film Soundtrack is a 2-CD collection of 45 songs, with liner notes that contain a synopsis to each track. This compilation manages to include nearly all of the rare and classic songs that feature in the Buried Country story, leaving aside much of the music that was made purely for entertainment and focusing on the more 'significant' compositions. The hillbilly-styled Cut A Rug by Dougie Young, the tragic Brown Skin Baby by Bob Randall, and the aforementioned Gurindji Blues are all here. What stands out most about the music is how so many different styles have been adapted to tell the tales of social struggle and injustice. From straight Country and Western through to Gospel, from acoustic blues to nightclub jazz singing.

If You Don't, Somebody Else Will

DOUG KERSHAW – THE LOUISIANA MAN - WB 1978 (Vinyl rip)

Some like this album, some don’t !

This album was done to fill up the final slot on his contract with WB. First we start out with the lamest cover of "Jambalaya (On The Bayou)" known to man. Yes, the cover by Gerry & The Pacemakers was taken into account. Doug introduces the track with "To the Cajun land, and to my Cajun people". Two things which no longer gave him the time of day, as the Cajuns would take such as an insult. Yet ANOTHER version of "Louisiana Man" follows, but its not the Shakespearean drama-fest that the version on the "Swamp Grass" album was. Moving on, the question is, "who wants to hear Doug Kershaw cover Randy Newman?", unless you want to hear "Marie", the answer would be no. Then we get a Jesse Winchester tune, in French, and Doug once again shows us how horrible his French speaking is, as he sings the number in Canadian French. Then there's the unspeakable Dylan cover. "Don't try No-Doze"? C'mon Doug! "Just Wanna Feel The Magic" is a nice Mel McDaniel cover and its a contender for best track on the LP. "Hardly Anymore" is MOR while "French Waltz" is just as generic as its title. "If You Don't..." is an upbeat tune with a pumping dance beat and gets old fast. The "Sooner I Go" and "Louisana Sun" were better the first time around, back when Rusty & Doug recorded them in the 60's. The latter track previously appeared on the "Devil's Elbow" album. Bottom line: Doug is a better showman than a recording artist.

Short But Sweet

MOON MULLICAN – The Old Texan - King

Posted by rolling

This is a CD reissue of an original King album by Moon Mullican. The material is excellent (except a “curious” version of Jambalaya – UG) and largely unavailable elsewhere. The main highlights not available on another album are "So long", "1001 sleepless nights", "Keep a light in the window for me" & "A Crushed red rose". The material is above the law and shows anyone who isn't aware of the fact that country music in the old days was so diverse and broad. There is only one reason that this album doesn't deserve 5 stars: some of the songs (such as "Leaving you with a worried mind", "Short but sweet" & "Well oh well") are edited and omit much of Moon's piano playing and other playing between the vocal verses. Unfortunately, many of the songs that are cut aren't available on other CDs and you need to look for the hard to find 45s and 78s to get the full versions of the songs.

Tom Cat Blues

JORMA KAUKONEN - Blue Country Heart

Singer and guitarist extraordinaire Jorma Kaukonen was a devoted aficionado of early-20th-century rural music long before he cofounded Jefferson Airplane in 1965 and Hot Tuna some years later. On this solo album, Kaukonen has found an imaginative setting to remind listeners how a fusion of styles and influences from both black and white musicians defined American country music in its formative decades. Included here are gems, both familiar and obscure, by the likes of Jimmie Rodgers, the Delmore Brothers, Jimmie Davis, Cliff Carlisle, and other country musicians who were clearly inspired by their blues cousins. Backed by the Nashville All-Stars, a supersonic string band comprising bluegrass masters Sam Bush (mandolin), Jerry Douglas (Dobro), Béla Fleck (banjo), and Byron House (stand-up bass), all playing on vintage 1920s and '30s acoustic instruments, Kaukonen revives and vividly reinterprets these blues-drenched country classics for a new generation of listeners. --Bob Allen

Discs Seven and Eight compile all circulating sessions featuring Buddy as a side musician and/or producer, plus songs Buddy wrote that he never recorded, with others finishing the compositions posthumously.
Some tracks, which erroneously appeared on previous compilations, have been excluded:
Buddy shared a session with Billly Walker on 12 March, 1957, but does not feature on Billy's recordings.
"When Sin Stops" by The Nighthawks (Hamilton 50006), on the Vigotone set does not feature Buddy.
Similarly, "Oh Boy!" on the Vigotone Set is by Billy And The Glens (Jaro 77006), not Sonny West.
The contemptible "Ni**er Hatin' Me" was recorded in the late 60s(!) by Johnny Rebel (CJ. Trahan).

I Got Stripes

PAUL EVANS & The Rocky Mount Ramblers – 21 YEARS IN A TENNESSEE JAIL – Kapp LP KL-1346 (1964)

Because we find, in this moment, in many blogs a Paul Evans “Teenie” compilation, I remember that I have an LP of him…
Not really my cup of tea (!?), million miles far from a Folsom or San Quentin JC’s album but… uh… pleasant.
An addition to his very good rendition of “Hushabye-A-Little Guitar”…

01 - Ninety Nine Years
02 - Shackles And Chains
03 - The Prisoner's Song
04 - Another Town - Another Jail

07 - Twenty One Years

Mean!

MARTI’ BROM – MEAN (Vinyl rip from the Squarebird 45rpm mono singles boxset)

Her band isn't talking. Maybe it was a childhood spent wrestling alligators in the swamp for pennies from tourists. And later, riding the rails and fighting the other hobos for the last cold stogie. However, we could verify none of these stories, not finding any surviving witnesses. Some say the answer lies in the songs she writes. But could it really be true that "my man hadn't come for love and affection, he came to watch me drown" or that "as I was going down for the last time, a smile came upon his face". Sure, such an experience is enough to make just about anyone mean, but did it really happen? The only way to really get to the root of the matter is to flat out ask the lady herself. To tell the truth, however, we're just too scared to do it.

Marti' Brom - a gal born and bred in St. Louis, Missouri, she spent her summers in the bayous of South Louisiana with her grandparents. Today, she applies her bluesy St. Louis voice and sensibilities to the hillbilly purist aesthetics found in Austin, Texas to create a raucous but sultry rockabilly music. Her vision is to bring back a hillbilly glamour to country and rockabilly music.

Brom's first single, "Crazy Fever," written by High Noon guitarist Sean Mencher, was released in 1992 on a small Nashville-based label, but subsequent releases came slowly. Two more singles in 1995 and 1996, as well as a 1995 live cassette and a handful of compilation appearances were all anyone outside of Austin heard of Martí Brom until she and Bobby released "Mean!" in 1998 on their own Squarebird label.

The package was unusual, to say the least; a 7-inch reel-to-reel tape box including the same material presented in two formats: an 8-song stereo CD and 4 mono 45 rpm singles. The recording was produced by Brent Wilson of The Wagoneers fame on 1960 vintage equipment.

"We had the concept for the box first. We thought it'd be cool to put four 45s in a box, like the old box sets I collected from thrift stores."

Though Brom has long been associated by many with Austin's rockabilly scene, "Mean!" demonstrated that Brom also had a real gift for traditional country music, with "Wicked White Lies" and "Wanna Kiss" in particular showing off Brom's country side to great effect.
